Outstanding Field Assembled at Pacific Life Open
This year's Pacific Life Open draw features 47 of the Top 50 players in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, including every player in the Top 45.
World No. 1 Roger Federer comes in as the top seed for the fifth consecutive year and the former three-time champion (2004-06) will be looking to capture his first title in 2008. Federer will take on the winner of Sergio Roitman and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in his opening round match. The first seed he could play is No. 25 Nicolas Almagro in the third round.
Federer's top half of the draw includes possible fourth round opponents No. 15 Tommy Robredo or No. 23 Ivan Ljubicic along with quarterfinal opponents No. 6 Andy Roddick or No. 11 Andy Murray, both two-time ATP winners this season.
Roddick and Murray have tricky opening round matches. The American plays the winner of Tommy Haas and Julien Benneteau while the British No. 1 takes on the Jurgen Melzer and Marat Safin survivor. The first seed Murray could face is No. 20 Ivo Karlovic in the third round.
In the second quarter of the draw, the highest seeds are No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko, No. 7 David Nalbandian, No. 12 Fernando Gonzalez and No. 13 Mikhail Youzhny. No. 24 and two-time winner Lleyton Hewitt also is in that section. Hewitt opens against the winner of Luis Horna-Las Vegas champion Sam Querrey.
In the bottom half of the draw (third quarter), No. 3 and last year's finalist Novak Djokovic, No. 5 David Ferrer, No. 10 Tomas Berdych and No. 16 Guillermo Canas, who upset Federer last year, are the highest seeds. Six of the 12 qualifiers in the tournament are also in this section of the draw. Djokovic's first seeded opponent is No. 27 Philipp Kohlschreiber and he could meet Canas or No. 21 Juan Monaco in the fourth round.
In the final quarter of the draw, No. 2 and defending champion Rafael Nadal opens against a qualifier or Austrian Werner Eschauer. Nadal could meet countryman and close friend Feliciano Lopez, the No. 32 seed, in the third round. Possible fourth round opponents include either Frenchmen No. 14 Paul-Henri Mathieu or No. 17/Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Nadal lost to Tsonga in the semifinals in Melbourne.
No. 8 Richard Gasquet and No. 9 James Blake are the highest seeds in Nadal's section. He could meet one of them in the quarterfinals. Gasquet opens with the winner of countryman Sebastien Grosjean and Robin Soderling while Blake takes on the winner of Potito Starace and Marc Gicquel.
The wild cards in the tournament are Mario Ancic (vs. Gael Monfils) and Americans Robby Ginepri (vs. Vincent Spadea), John Isner (vs. Simone Bolelli), Jesse Levine (vs. Stanislas Wawrinka), and Donald Young (vs. a qualifier).

SPORTINGO
Chris Goldsmith - Mon, Mar 17, 08
He's been a top 20 player on the ATP for the past two seasons. At 23 he is no spring chick but it's time for him to win a Grand Slam.
'The 6ft 5ins giant of a player did reach his best finish in a Grand Slam event last year with a quarter-final birth at Wimbledon'
The Czech Republic is famed for its battling tennis stars. Ivan Lendl and Martina Navratilova were two players who, although defecting from their home country, have shown what a breeding ground that country can be!.
Petr Korda was the last Czech men's player to win a Grand Slam event back in 1998, and 10 years on can the talented Tomas Berdych repeat this feat? I think he may have a chance.
Berdych is well known for being an under-achiever so far in his professional career. He has only won three tournaments so far. The Czech player's problems seems to be the big matches, where nerves seems to get the better of him. He has career victories over some of the best players in the world, including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick. He has reached numerous quarter-finals, semis and finals. But his lack of tournament wins shows he needs to be more confident when in the later stages of events.
His Grand Slam success has been even less satisfactory for the 23-year-old. Berdych, before last year, failed to get past the last 16 in any of the Grand Slam events, but to be fair the majority of his fourth round opponents have been the elite like Federer and other top 10 players.
However, if Berdych is to realise his dream of winning a Grand Slam, he needs to be able to beat the best in the business - and consistently. Berdych can play on any surface like most champions. His three tournament wins have all come on different surfaces, the grass of Halle in Germany, the clay of Palermo in Italy and the indoor carpets of Paris, France.
The 6ft 5ins giant of a player did reach his best finish in a Grand Slam event last year with a quarter-final birth at Wimbledon. Unforunately for Berdych he came across an inspired Rafael Nadal who was still revelling in his comeback victory against Robin Soderling of Sweden in the previous round.
Berdych has powerful groundstrokes and a big serve, but against Nadal couldn't produce when it mattered. He had to retire injured at the US Open when he had powered his way into the fourth round, and this year in the Australian open he was in good form before Federer got in his way again in the fourth round.
Tomas also reached semi-finals in Tokyo, Bangkok, Munich and Monte Carlo as well as quarter-finals in Basel and Rome. If only Berdych could have won a couple more matches in these events he would see himself as a top five player rather just top 10.
He is so much better than what he has achieved. He just needs to realise this before it's too late. Last year Berdych had wins over Youzhny, Massu, Baghdatis, Robredo and Ancic but the Czech player needs to start beating the Nadals, Djokovics and Federers of the four in order to win the big events.
Let's hope he can reach his potential and put the Czech Republic back on the tennis map where it belongs. Tomas is too good not to be a top five player and I think he can achieve this feat this year if he can play his best tennis and control his nerves.
