Berdych Out With Ankle Injury By Tennis Week

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Tomas Berdych's clay-court preparations have taken a significant hit after he suffered strained ligaments in his ligaments during the fifth set of Sunday's Davis Cup match against Nikolay Davydenko.

The ninth-ranked Czech said he will start rehab in a week and hopes to be fully fit in time for the French Open, which begins on May 25.

"One ligament is slightly strained but the others are okay, so it does not have to be in plaster. I will start rehabilitation in a week," Berdych told the CTK agency in comments published by AFP. "I hope [the French Open] is far enough away. If I could get in another tournament before that would be good."

Berdych was upset in straight sets by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the opening round of the 2007 Roland Garros after a solid clay-court campaign in which he reached the semifinals in Monte Carlo and the quarterfinals of Rome last spring.

The 22-year-old Berdych posted his best result of the season in reaching the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami earlier this month, losing to Rafael Nadal, 6-7(6), 2-6.

He lost to Marat Safin in the opening match of last weekend's Davis Cup quarterfinal on the red clay of Moscow. Berdych held a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(5), 3-6, 2-1 lead over Davydenko and was serving at 40-all when he injured his ankle on Sunday.

Berdych raring to go after injury

Saturday, 10 May 2008

Czech tennis player Tomas Berdych said yesterday that he has recovered from an ankle injury and is raring to play in next week's Hamburg Masters tournament.

"I sat down with my trainer and physiotherapist on Wednesday and we agreed that there is no reason why I should not play in Hamburg. I feel great and I want to play tournaments again," the 10th ranked player told the CTK agency.

Berdych suffered the ankle injury at a crucial stage of his country's Davis Cup tie last month which Russia won 3-2 to advance to the semi-finals.

The Czech player was worried the injury could overshadow his preparations for the French Open at the end of this month after already missing Masters tournaments in Monte Carlo and Rome.

Safin, a former World No. 1, needed to qualify this week for the season's final clay court ATP Masters Series tournament after entering with a No. 89 ranking.       Tennis player Safin takes out Berdych in Hamburg

HAMBURG, Germany (AFP) - Former world number one Marat Safin continued his comeback with a straight-sets win over ninth-seed Tomas Berdych in the second round of the Hamburg Masters Series here on Wednesday.

Safin has plummeted down the rankings to 89th after suffering a series of injuries and had to qualify for the main draw, but hit four aces on his way to knocking out Berdych, 11th in the world, 7-5, 6-4 in 90 minutes.

The 28-year-old Russian, who was runner-up here in 2000 and 2002, is now on course to meet Carlos Moya in the 3rd round, the Spaniard beat Belgium's Oliver Rochus in his second round match.

      Match Report:

Marat Safin and Tomas Berdych both made a host of unforced errors - twenty-seven for each of them. The real difference in the match was that Safin was better on the big points. He saved three of the four break points against him, and converted three of the four he had against Berdych.

     Résumé:

Berdych's loss does not really come as an enormous surprise. Berdych had only played two matches on clay for the year coming into Hamburg. Both were losses, and one of them came at the hands of Safin himself in Davis Cup. Tomas Berdych has fallen in the second round at the Rothenbaum for the third time in four visits. He was beaten at the same stage in 2005 (l. to Federer) and 2007 (l. to Moya). The 22-year-old drops to 12-9 on the season and 0-3 on clay courts.
